Mama Maria’s Authentic Italian Bread
It should not be intimidating to make Italian bread from scratch. Here is a recipe my Italian mother used to bake a week’s worth of bread for several years. It came out perfect every time!
2/3 stick margarine
2/3 cup milk
1 1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
2 packets dry rapid rise yeast
7 cups bread flour
Mix the dry ingredients. Heat margarine, milk, water to 120 degrees (warm to the touch). Mix together wet and dry ingredients. Knead, let rise for 30 minutes. Shape into loaves. Let rise for another 30 minutes. Bak at 375 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes (until golden brown). This recipe yields 5 loaves.
Freeze any loaves you don’t think you will be using immediately. Pop in the toaster oven for about 10 minutes to warm and you will have fresh tasting bread whenever you want!
