Maintain your Gluten Free Diet at Wendys Fast Food Restaurant

If you have celiac disease, are gluten intolerant or allergic to wheat and wheat by-products, fast food restaurants may not seem like an option for you. Fast foods are largely made up of sandwiches and burgers, both of which come on wheat bread products. Fast food also includes nuggets and chicken patties, both of which are breaded and then deep-fried. Any of these foods can cause serious symptoms in one inflicted with celiac disease or other related condition.

Wendy’s fast food restaurants, though, claim they can provide the gluten intolerant with a meal. A list of gluten free foods at Wendy’s is listed in a PDF format at Wendy’s website.

The list includes such choices as hamburger patties, grilled chicken breast, baked potatoes, salads and side orders.

You could enjoy a grilled chicken breast, a baked potato with sour cream and chives, a small garden salad and a Chocolate Frosty.

French fries are inherently gluten-free because they are made from a naturally gluten free food: potatoes. However, the French fries served up at Wendy’s may be deep-fried in the same oil as the breaded chicken breasts.

Cross contamination is just as hazardous to the celiac sufferer as eating foods containing wheat or gluten. If you want an order of French fries, inquire as to whether or not the fries are cooked in the same oil as breaded foods. If not, then order and enjoy. If they are, avoid them as you would a slice of Wonder bread.

Wendy’s offers a variety of salads as well. The Chicken Caesar Salad is an option as long as you forego the croutons. The Chicken BLT Salad with the grilled chicken is gluten free as well. You must specify that you want the grilled chicken, however, as it is usually served with the breaded chicken. The side salad, made up of lettuce and vegetables, is also an option.

You can also have chili, a mandarin orange cup and any drink off the menu. Wendy’s offers sodas, teas, milk, coffee and water.

Avoid the Twisted Frostys, though, as these contain wheat products and by products, such as Oreo cookies and malted mix. If you must have a sweet treat, stick with the Chocolate Frosty.

Wendy’s restaurants serve up fast foods, but the restaurant website clearly defines the nutritional values of the franchises’ foods, as well as displaying options for those who require gluten free foods. As awareness of food allergies increases, Wendy’s has responded by making information available to the public.
