Jersey Italian Hot Dog

If you hang out in New Jersey long enough you’re bound to discover their famous Italian Hot Dog. Jersey Italian Dogs are the essence of a great, hot, sloppy, “out of this world” delicious hot dog! If you are lucky enough to be able to get to the Jersey Shore boardwalk or a North Jersey Italian deli you can get one of these scrumptious dogs. But if you’re not in the neighborhood, surprise your family and make these hot dogs at home.

Start with a well-made hot dog, like Thurman’s, Sabrett’s, or Boars Head beef or pork frankfurter, (the longer the better). Look for rolls with “substance” that can hold together some major ingredients without falling apart even after being slathered in hot mustard, ketchup or tomato sauce. Italian bread, or submarine bread is perfect. And although it’s true that in New Jersey these hot dogs are often deep fried, they can be grilled or pan-fried to taste just as good or better.

Get your ingredients together and start cooking!

—Jersey delicious Italian dog−

6 extra long Thumann’s hot dogs

6 long sandwich rolls or Italian bread loaves which can be cut in half and toasted a little if preferred

½ cup – to a cup of oil, canola is best

3 large russet potatoes, peeled and cut into small cubes

2 large sweet Vidalia onions, sliced thinly

2 green bell peppers, sliced thinly without the seeds

2 red bell peppers, sliced thinly without the seeds

Salt, pepper and paprika to taste

Ketchup and spicy brown mustard

In a large pan add enough oil to barely cover the bottom of the pan then gently heat.

Slice the hot dogs down the center lengthwise and add them to the pan, cook slowly

In another large pan heat the rest of the oil and cook the potatoes for a few minutes before adding the peppers and onions, add salt, pepper and paprika

When everything is cooked, put the hot dog in the roll and top it with a heaping amount of the pepper, onion and potato mixture. Top that with ketchup, mustard or both and there you have it, right off the Soprano’s dinner table.

Variations to this hot dog:

Italian pizza dog:

Add mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce to the Jersey Italian hot dog

Spiced up Italian dog:

Use hot peppers instead of sweet peppers, mushrooms can be added too.
