Picture a cold rainy or snowy day and you snuggle up in the house with a blanket reading your favorite book. What would be the ultimate add on for this picture? A nice warm bowl of Ham Hock Soup with Vegetables would be perfect for this picture.
You will need the following ingredients:
1 Ham Hock any size
2 Ham Shanks any size
2 cloves of garlic, diced
2 carrots, peeled and cut
4 medium potato’s peeled and coarsely cubed
5 cups of water, parted
1 can of kidney beans, undrained
1 small can of tomato sauce, unsalted
1 can of tomato soup
2 tbsp of honey
2 tbsp of black pepper
1 tbsp of garlic salt
2 tbsp of garlic powder
First, boil the ham hock and ham shanks in 4 cups of water until the meat pulls right off or it is easy to separate the bone and cartilage from the meat. Add water as needed. Season with 1 tbsp of black pepper, 1 tbsp of garlic salt, and add in garlic. Remove all bones and cartilage from the stock pot.
Second, add in your potato and carrots. Boil in the new stock soup with the meat until tender. Add in the 1 small can of tomato sauce and 1 can of tomato soup.
Third, keep stirring to avoid sticking to the bottom and burning. Add in the can of kidney beans with sauce from the can. Stir well and blend the flavors.
Finally, add in the remainder of the black pepper, the garlic powder, and depending on your taste you can add more garlic salt.
*You can also add some paprika and white pepper for flavor, this adds a little zip to the soup. Do not add excessive amounts, just a pinch is enough.
Enjoy this delicious and savory warm meal with some sour dough bread or French baguette bread.
